Petersburg Land Grant Bill Signed into Law

PETERSBURG – Gov. Bill Walker today signed Senate Bill 28 into law. SB 28 was sponsored by Sen. Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) to increase the Petersburg Borough’s land entitlement to 14,666 acres. When the Petersburg Borough was created by the voters in 2013 they had only received 1,896 acres. With passage of the SB 28, the Petersburg Borough is now on equal-footing with other organized boroughs across the State of Alaska.

Alaska National Guard members conclude humanitarian relief mission in Puerto Rico

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – It has been more than six weeks since 155 mph winds from Hurricane Maria savaged Puerto Rico, and almost one month since Soldiers and Airmen of the Alaska National Guard arrived to assist with much-needed humanitarian relief. Guard members from the Alaska Air National Guard’s 168th and 176th Wings and the Alaska Army National Guard’s 38th Troop Command and 297th Regional Support Group arrived in Puerto Rico on October 6 for a 45-day rotation, joining more than four thousand Guard members from approximately 20 states who are helping to rebuild and resupply the territory.

Eagle River Brown Bears Prompt Schools Safety Advisory

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is aware of a brown bear sow and three cubs frequenting Eagle River neighborhoods on both sides of the river, particularly from West Parkview Terrace to Banff Springs Street. Parents who have children walking to neighborhood elementary, middle, and high schools or standing at school bus stops should take precautions including considering providing alternate transportation to schools to avoid students walking through neighborhoods in early morning or evening hours.

Chugiak Soccer Club Awarded Mac Center Concessions Contract

CHUGIAK, AK, October 19, 2017 – Chugiak Soccer Board Member, Barry Schimmack, is pleased to announce that the soccer club has come to agreement with the Harry MacDonald Ice Arena to operate the concession stand during ice skating events beginning Saturday, October 28th. The club will operate the concessions stand for over 45 high school hockey games and tournaments, youth tournaments, figure skating competitions, Learn to Skate shows, Eagle River Hockey League (ERHL) tournaments, and the annual Classic Car Show.

Homestead Walk-a-thon

Homestead Elementary Student Leadership Council is made up of 38 fourth-sixth graders. Recently they organized an event to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Their well attended Walk-a-thon raised a total of $3,023.

NSAA Season Kickoff event offers free family fun, community outdoor programs and Alaska’s Olympic skiing stars

As Southcentral Alaska’s winter enthusiasts patiently wait for snow to stick around the region, Anchorage’s Nordic ski community starts its season with a party at Sunday’s NSAA Season Kickoff. This year’s event is highlighted by a meet-and-greet with Alaska’s Olympic and World Cup Nordic skiing stars Kikkan Randall, Sadie Bjornsen, Erik Bjornsen, Rosie Brennan and Scott Patterson. They will sign posters, pose for photos and join NSAA in promoting the 2018 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships, which take place January 3-8 at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. All are expected to compete in February’s 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Celebrating Red Ribbon Week

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was born on July 26, 1947 in Mexicali, Mexico. He graduated from Calexico High School in Calexico, Calif. in 1966. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Marines where he served for two years. Following his military service, Kiki joined the Calexico Police Department and later moved to the El Centro Police Department.
