As I sat to coffee with Andra Hammond, Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay, she grabbed a pink box off the coffee shop counter and began to empty the contents in front of me. “What is that?” I asked curiously. “It’s a facial box,” she replied and then explained how she had put several of these boxes at local coffee shops and restaurants around the area so customers could enter to win a facial. But don’t be underwhelmed; this facial won’t be a mere packet of Mary Kay products for the winner to take home. The winners from the drawing will get two appointments with Andra herself; one for an in-person facial with educational information on skincare and a second appointment to cover makeup and color. With both appointments, the recipient will learn not only how to buy the right makeup but also learn how to properly take of their skin and apply their cosmetics. What a novel concept! But it isn’t all that surprising, because this was exactly how Andra was introduced to Mary Kay herself.
After signing up for a drawing at the Bear Paw Festival, a May Kay representative contacted Andra to congratulate her on winning! After her facial, she attended a regional Mary Kay event and signed up on the spot to be a representative. The local consultants had come up with the idea to rent studios in the area to meet with clients and administer facials. So by partnering with other consultants, Andra is able to use studios in Anchorage and Wasilla to meet her customers’ needs and their busy schedules. They are hoping to find a similar space in Eagle River as well.
Andra is a woman of many talents and focuses.
In addition to selling Mary Kay products, she keeps a full schedule working both at Garcia’s and at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium as a CAD designer technician. When time allows, she also decorates cakes on the side. Even though her children are mostly grown, having the flexibility to work online and in local studios helps her run a successful direct sales business.
Many people sign up to be a Mary Kay consultant for the personal discount. By selling $225 in product in a year, consultants are able to receive 50% off their personal purchases. As expected, Andra takes full advantage of Mary Kay’s great products and has many favorites that she personally uses. The company’s oil-free eye makeup remover and new charcoal masks were at the top of her list. By far, however, she was most excited about their new pink, sparkly, Hydrogel Eye Patches. This product is excellent for nighttime use or when you first wake up, and they are reasonably priced at only $40 for 60 patches.
