Memorial Day Weekend!
It’s Memorial Day weekend, which means it’s officially summer, and it’s time to break out the gardening tools, fishing supplies, and other summer activities. Do you know what our favorite summer activity is? You guessed it (we thought you might!): the Anchorage Market!
Skip the traffic heading out of town, and enjoy your daylight (over 18 hours!) with us, all weekend long!
Also, just a heads-up: while we will be at the market this weekend, our office location will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, May 27 and 28, in observance of Memorial Day. Our office will reopen Wednesday, May 29.
We would like to introduce one of our wonderful vendors who will be at the Anchorage Market & Festival this weekend:

Steve’s journey as a leather artisan began with a kit from the Boy Scout Store, when he picked up leather working as a hobby at a young age. With the help of family and friends who wanted things made for them, he increased his skill level and inventory of leather working tools.
When Steve left the Northeast for college in the mid-west, he never imagined he would be able to make a living from leather working, so he left it behind. However, when his friends found out about his old hobby, and many expressed interest in some hand-made leather items, Steve asked his parents to ship his gear which began laying a foundation for a part-time job through college, and now a full-time career.
The leather in Phillimore’s products is sourced from ranchers in the United States, and the hides are tanned in Argentina and Mexico by some of the oldest leather artisan families in the world. After the tanned hides arrive to Steve, he cuts them, separating the thickest areas to the thinnest, and begin to cut out different pieces for his products. Then begins the long job of hand-stamping. Some of these patterns he uses, he’s had since the 70s! Others he just sit at the bench and tools around. Steve says that he never throws anything away, and sometimes he even ends up liking his mistakes.
Then, each piece of leather is hand-processed to the tanned, patina look that makes Phillimore Leather goods so distinctive. His finishing method is not secret, but it was developed over the years combining multiple dyes and finishes to achieve the look he likes. It takes five, very involved, steps. Steve finishes all of his leather to highlight its character, he doesn’t paint the finish on. Steve says “It’s a long process and takes a lot of time. Each piece of leather is different, and I want to show that through this finishing process.”
Steve has been an Anchorage Market vendor since 2017. He chose to participate in the Market because of the family atmosphere and the great vendors he gets to work with. Steve says his favorite thing about the Anchorage Market is that the staff is great to work with, they are always willing to assist.
As pictured above, Phillimore Leather is unique in the product because they custom fit each belt that is sold while their customer are there.
You can find Phillimore Leather and his wife in booth space 163 Caribou Corridor each weekend here at the Anchorage Market through September 8th.
