Engage in conversation with disaster psychologist Dr. Jamie Aten as he helps us understand our emotions and a path forward toward healing and resilience following the big earthquake last November.
Eagle River, AK— On Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Community Covenant Church, 16123 Artillery Rd. Eagle River, a free workshop called After the Shock: Understanding the Shake-Up will be open to the public. The workshop will be led by Dr. Jamie Aten to address fear, faith and resilience in the aftermath of last year’s earthquake. Lunch will be included. Resources and information about long-term recovery assistance will also be available. “Many folks in our community are still dealing with the effects of the earthquake,” says Community Covenant Church’s Lead Pastor, Todd Michelo, “Beyond the mess and financial hardships, there are also lingering emotional scars for many. We wanted to provide a forum for folks to address those concerns and find resolutions. We are excited to host Dr. Jamie Aten and believe his expertise will be a wonderful resource those in our community.”
The workshop will be led by nationally acclaimed author, speaker, and disaster psychologist, Dr. Jamie Aten. His work draws from his experiences as a Hurricane Katrina and cancer survivor. He is founder and executive director of the Humanitarian Disaster Institute (HDI) at Wheaton College. HDI is first faith-based academic research center in the country. Dr. Aten also holds the Blanchard Chair of Humanitarian & Disaster Leadership and helps train humanitarian, disaster, and ministry graduate students. To date, Dr. Aten has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, resources, reports and other publications. Overall, his work on faith and disaster resilience has been supported by over $6 million in research grants. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, TIME, Christianity Today, CBS, Fox News, Moody Radio and some of the top scholarly journals in the field of psychology.
