Abu Dhabi Dip and Opening Ceremony Completes Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg
ABU DHABI, UAE – Freezin’ for a Reason meets Abu Dhabi. Officer Angie Fraize with the Anchorage Police Department took the plunge in the “Abu Dhabi Dip” yesterday where more than 80 law enforcement members took the plunge to raise awareness and support for Special Olympics athletes around the world. The “Abu Dhabi Dip “refreshed the law enforcement members before they concluded their Final Leg journey carrying the “Flame of Hope” into the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019.
The Final Leg team began their journey in Abu Dhabi where they embarked on two different routes, running the Flame of Hope throughout seven emirates in UAE at various events, honoring the spirit of the Special Olympics global movement and delivering a message of hope to communities where people with intellectual disabilities continue to fight for acceptance and inclusion.
The LETR Final Leg Team consisted of an international team of 122 members, which included 83 Law Enforcement Officer runners, 10 Special Olympics athletes and support personnel who served as Guardians of the Flame® as they ran the Flame of Hope throughout UAE. Final Leg runners from around the world were selected to proudly represent their local Torch Run and Special Olympics Programs in the Final Leg.

Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi will be the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world in 2019. From March 14 to 21, 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing more than 192 nations will participate in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports in venues throughout Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The first ever Special Olympics World Games to be held in the Middle East and North Africa will also be the most Unified Games in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement, with inclusion of people of determination with intellectual disabilities in every aspect of the event.
