And the award goes to…
Valerie Baalerud received the prestigious Milken Educator Award at 9:30 a.m. on Feb 1st at a school assembly at Eagle River High School (ERHS).
She received the award from Alaska Commissioner of Education Michael Johnson. The award was given in front of an audience of nearly 1000 which included Anchorage School District’s Superintendent Dr. Deena Paramo, students, staff, and former winners of the Milken Educator Award.
Baalerud teaches AP World History at ERHS in addition to regular history classes. She has coached Model United Nations, flag football, track, and advised ERHS’s student government. Rounding out her involvement, she coaches the Drama, Debate and Forensics club at ERHS, through which she mentors some of the most competitive debaters in the district.
Baalerud is the only Alaska educator to receive the award this year and only 1 of 44 educators in the country.
In addition to a $25,000 prize, she will also receive numerous professional development opportunities.
