Ski 4 Kids – it’s a fun, festive and free family event!
The annual event provides local children up to 14 years old the opportunity to explore and enjoy various winter recreational experiences. They can tackle an obstacle course, take aim in a mock biathlon, learn about sit-skiing, meet Olympians, and try skiing, snowshoeing and biking. At 1:30 p.m., kids will take to skis on a number of timed and untimed courses of various lengths. Parents can ski with their kids, too.
Register online today (www.anchoragenordicski.com/events/ski-4-kids) or pre-register and pick up bibs from noon-7 p.m.
Thursday, February 22, at the REI Community Room; participants can also register at the event. Preregistration is required for the timed ski course and can be done online. Registration for untimed courses is from noon-1:15 p.m. on event day in the chalet.
There is no set participation fee for any of the activities, but donations are welcome and help make sure all kids, regardless of family income level, have access to cross-country ski programs and equipment. Net proceeds from Ski 4 Kids directly benefit local schools, youth organizations and programs by providing new ski equipment and other needed resources. Funds also help bus kids from many Title 1 schools to Kincaid Park for Ski 4 Kids, ensuring many students an outdoor experience that would not otherwise be available to them. Schools and other organizations can apply for ski equipment grants through the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage (NSAA) at www.anchoragenordicski.com/events/ski-4-kids-grants/; deadline is Thursday, March 15.
Thanks to generous donors and community partners, event participants will each receive a customized buff, finisher’s medal, cookies and hot chocolate, and other special surprises. Anchorage Parks and Recreation, Healthy Futures, and NSAA work in partnership to host Ski 4 Kids and are committed to supporting and nurturing active involvement in winter sports and recreation for all ages. Sharing this commitment are sponsors ConocoPhillips, Anchorage Pediatric Group, LaTouche Pediatrics, Banker Law Group, Elsberg Family Foundation, CRW Engineering Group, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, and Great Harvest Bread Company. Thank you!
