Eagle River Hockey League: AAA Week Twenty
It’s WEEK TWENTY of the Eagle River Hockey League, and this is the AAA recap.
Garcia’s vs. Pizza man
With only four games remaining in the regular season, the AAA division teams battled it out at the MAC on 2-14-18. Fourth place Garcia’s (4-14-2) defeated second place Pizza Man (9-8-3) on Wednesday, 6-3. Garcia’s stated the game strong and finished the same way. Garcia’s, Travis Martin lead the team in scoring and netted his first of three goals mid-way through the first period. Also, in the first, Garcia’s Blake Brazil netted a power play strike making it 2-0. Billy McCormick assisted on both of those goals. In the second, Reid McDonald dished the puck to Martin who finished the play with his second goal of the evening. With about three minutes to play, Martin returned the favor and fed the puck to McDonald who buried it ending the period 4-0. It heated up in the third and the boys from Pizza Man came back from the break ready to play. But first, Martin secured his hat trick by scoring a power play goal unassisted three minutes into the period making it, 5-0. Justin Frechione got Pizza Man on the board with an unassisted goal. About a minute later, Kyler Quinn also scored unassisted making it 5-2. At 9:13, Brazil got his second goal of the evening bring the score to 6-2. With two minutes to play and on the power play, Pizza man’s Jake Thompson scored the final goal of the game. The referees earned their money, they called eight penalties, four on each team.
Jalapeno’s vs. Homestead
In the late game, first place Jalapeno’s (16-1-3) defeated third place Homestead (5-11-4). In the first period the teams traded goals. Robert Monfore got Jalapeno’s scoring started at 9:58. The Homesteader’s answered that goal by one from Taylor Garner. With :35 remaining in the period, Dylan Kingrea scored unassisted for Jalapeno’s making it 2-1. The second period, Kingrea put the puck in the back of the net for his second goal of the night. Two minutes later, Homesteader’s Matt Viens got the score within one with his goal. But from then on, Jalapeno’s poured it on fast and often. Billy Bagron, Jason Elledge and Dustin Smith all scored ending the period, 6-2. The Homesteaders didn’t go down easy. In the final frame, Powell Gallagher scored with some help from Adam Powell. A minute later, John Garner added to the score sheet making it 6-4. As time was winding down, the Homesteaders pulled goaltender, Adam Vogel for the extra attacker. With :08 left, Jalapeno’s Carl Hanson got control of the puck and scored an empty netter making the final 7-4, Jalapeno’s. Much like the first game, the referees got a workout, calling nine penalties. Six whistled on the Homesteaders and three on Jalapeno’s.
