Eagle River Hockey League: AAA Week Twenty-One
It’s WEEK TWENTY-ONE of the Eagle River Hockey League, and this is the AAA recap.
Homesteaders vs. Garcia’s
Garcia’s came away with a 6-3 victory over Homestead on Wednesday 2-21-18 at the MAC in the early ERHL AAA game. With the win, fourth place Garcia’s (5-14-2) is trailing third place Homestead (5-12-4) by only two points in the league standings. Garcia’s combination of Travis Martin and Justin Martin was clicking in the first period of the contest. At 16:37 Travis netted the first of two goals with the helpers going to Justin to take a 2-0 lead. Homestead got on the board with 1:24 remaining in the first on a power play goal by Ryan Bowdish. In the second, Garcia’s scored three unanswered goals which would make the difference in the final outcome. Chris Harrington scored followed by Ryan Comer and then by Blake Brazil making the score 5-1. After the break, Homestead came out strong when Jake Wilkins scored at 16:34 making the score 5-2. Travis Martin got his hattrick when he scored with the help from Brazil. With 7:58 left, Justin Martin was whistled for hooking and sent to the box, Homesteader’s Greg Gallagher found the back of the net for a power play goal making it 6-3, final. Referees called three penalties on each team, the third period both team sent two players to the box.
Pizza Man vs. Jalapenos
In the late game, first place Jalapeno’s (16-2-3) was handed their only second loss of the season by the second-place boys from Pizza man (10-8-3). The first period was uneventful, with no goals by either team. The second period had only one goal. With Jalapeno’s Ben Russell in the box for tripping, Pizza Man’s Shawn Casey netted a power play goal with some help from Thomas Schultz making it 1-0. It was an exciting third period. At 16:33 Pizza Man’s Dwayne Daniel was called for tripping and was in the penalty box when Patrick Zmuda scored a shorthanded goal for Pizza man making it 2-0. Midway through the third, Jalapeno’s Carl Hanson scored unassisted making it 2-1. In the final minutes, Jalapeno’s pulled netminder Seth Kollman for the extra attacker to no avail. With :024 seconds left, Michael McCurtain scored an empty netter and then again, he scored at :018 making it 4-1, final. Pizza Man was whistled for four penalties and Jalapeno’s for three.
