Who: Ashley Perry, the 13-year old young lady who began the Animal Shelter Reading Program; Anchorage Animal Care and Control (AACC) staff, and Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.
What: The Ashley Perry Animal Shelter Reading Program kick-offs at AACC. The program welcomes emerging and struggling readers to read to sheltered cats. Research has shown that given the opportunity to read without the fear of embarrassment can increase a young reader’s confidence and, therefore, their reading skills.

Ashley Perry is an energetic and driven young lady who wants to make a difference in the world despite facing her own obstacle: Ashley has been diagnosed with Turner syndrome, a disorder which can cause a variety of medical issues. AACC is thrilled to be able to help her meet her goal of establishing a shelter reading program.
