
It’s WEEK TEN of the Eagle River Hockey League, and this is the AA recap.
Shine’s Sushi vs. Cubs Painting
The Cubbies jumped into first place in the ERHL AA Division on Sunday night with a 5-2 victory over Shines. Cubbies improved their record to 7-1-2 while Shines missed out on two points, and are now at, 5-5-0. The first period saw some good saves by both goalies. Shine’s goalie, Tom Karpow registered eight saves and Cubs netminder, Patrick Zmuda registered seven for the period. Cubs netted the first tally with a goal from Ryan Johnson with the assist going to Zach Meehan. The second period, Cubbies Nate Curnow was whistled for a high sticking and Shines capitalized on the man advantage. Joe Braunwarth scored on the power play and tied the game 1-1. Meehan got his second assist when he fed James Kostka the puck for the go-ahead goal beating Karpow on the glove side. Shines Russell Miller thought he tied the game with a sweet wrist shot that beat Zumuda on the glove side, but the goal was waved off by referee Powell Gallagher with an off sides call. The third period heated up with the Cubbies scoring three goals by Tim Hilborn, Nate Curnow and Adam Gabrielson. Shine’s Steven Phillips finished off the scoring as time was running out making the final 5-2.
ER Alehouse vs. Play It Again Sports
Entering the game, last place Play It Again took on, the then first place ER Alehouse in the AA Division. It was Play it Again’s night, soundly defeating the Alehouse 5-1. Alehouse led off the scoring with a goal from Ryan Weaver and that’s all there would be from the Alehouse. From then on in, Play It Again took control of the game. Play It Again’s Kevin Hao scored unassisted to end the first 1-1. Play It Again added three unanswered goals in the second period by Nikoli Petrov, Paul Johnson and Rob Sackerson. Hao scored his second and the final goal of the game in the third with the assist going to Jeff Schroeder. Schroeder also assisted on Sackerson’s earlier goal. Alehouse goalie, Mike Allen finished the night with five saves on ten shots and Play It Again’s goalie Tony Boneta, finished with 26 saves on 27 shots. Â
Stellar Designs vs. OMR Brewing
With the win, OMR switched places with Stellar in the standings, taking over 4th place. OMR shut out the Stellar team 3-0. OMR’s netminder, Jon Maroney is credited with the shutout win facing 22 shots on net, all saves. Goaltender Chris Harrington made 21 saves for Stellar. The first period had goals from OMR’s David Roach, with the assist credited to Britt Damon. Damon also assisted on OMR’s second goal by Jason Novotny. The final goal of the game was made by Matthew St. Pierre with the helper credited to Rob Baril. A scoreless third period ended with the final score 3-0, OMR. The penalty box did not see much action as there was only one penalty called in the game.
