It’s WEEK NINE of the Eagle River Hockey League, and this is the AA recap.
Play It Again Sports vs. Stellar Designs
The early game played on Sunday featured fourth place Play It Again Sports vs. sixth place Stellar Designs. Penalties and power plays made the difference in this one. First goal of the game was scored on a power play strike in the first period by Stellar’s Kevin Blanchette with the assist credited to Cassie Kosinski. Play It Again Sports tied the game 1-1 on a second period goal by Don Bruno, Jeff Schroeder got the assist. With Play It Again’s John McCormick in the box for holding, Blasé Andromeda-Focht netted a power play goal in the third with the helper going to Robert McCormick. For added insurance, McCormick notched Stellar’s third goal unassisted. Stellar held on to win 3-1 over Play It Again. In net for Play It Again was Tony Boneta, he faced 18 shots. At the other end of the rink was Chris Harrington, he also faced 18 shots. Both teams now have two wins.
OMR Brewing vs. Shines Sushi
The second game of the evening was a tight one. With six points and in fifth place OMR Brewing took on third place with ten points, Shines Sushi. At 6:57 of the first, OMR’s Jason Novotny scored unassisted. A minute later, Shines answered with a goal from Mike Watson. With the first period winding down, OMR’s Michael Tencza got the go ahead goal with assistance from Adam Muller. Shines stepped up the pressure in the second, notching two unanswered goals, first by Charles Bahn than by Joe Braunwarth. The second period ended with Shines up by a goal, 3-2. The third period saw both teams up the pressure. Shine’s Steven Phillips started the scoring with OMR’s Alfonzo Gutzman following up with a goal. At 6:47, Shine’s Ty Newman found the back of the net making the game 5-3. With less than two minutes remaining, the only penalty of the game was called on Shine’s Mike Watson for tripping. OMR took advantage; Rob Zemcik with help from Ivan Hodes scored a power play goal to bring the game to within one goal. With a frantic minute left in the game, Shines held on to win 5-4. OMR’s netminder Brian Elfrain faced 34 shots and Shine’s goalie, Tom Karpow faced 25 shots.
Cub’s Painting vs. Eagle River Alehouse
The final game of the night featured division leaders, Cub’s Painting and Eagle River Alehouse. Both teams have identical records of 6-1-2. Alehouse is listed in first place with having scored a total of 38 goals to the Cub’s 23. Alehouse added two points with the victory making the teams tied at 14 points each. Midway through the first period, Alehouse forward, Chad Lammers, scored unassisted. The second period started strong for the Cubs. A minute after the start of the period, Ryan Johnson scored unassisted to tie the game at 1-1. But that’s all the Cubbies could muster as the Alehouse scored twice more in the period. Both goals by Adam Purdy unassisted. With little more than six minutes left, Alehouse’s Garrett Riley added the final goal with the helper going to Ryan Weaver. Final score 4-1, Alehouse. The game had only one penalty. Alehouse outshot the Cubbies, 23 shots to Cubs 11.
