It’s WEEK EIGHT of the Eagle River Hockey League, and this is the AAA recap.
Jalapenos vs. Homesteaders
It didn’t take long for Jalapenos to get on the board. At 16:07, forward Robert Monfore got the first of his two goals of the night with helper going to Ben Russell. It was all Jalapenos in the second. Dylan Kingrea, Robert Monfore and Brian “Swany” Swanson all scored and Russell notched his second assist on Swanson’s goal with :02 remaining in the period. After a scoreless first two periods, the Homesteaders put the push on in the third. At 12:05 Jesse Johnson netted an unassisted power play goal getting the Homesteaders on the scoreboard. With Jalapenos Billy Bagron in the penalty box for the second time, Homesteaders second goal was scored midway through the third by Jon Garner with the helper going to Shane Wescott. That’s as close as it would get, Jalapenos 4 – Homesteaders 2. Jalapenos is in first place with 14 points and Homesteaders are in third place with 6 points.
Garcia’s vs. Pizza Man
The referees’ earned their money on this one. The game had twelve penalties, six for each team for a total of 24 minutes spent in the box. The only first period goal was scored during a power play by Pizza Man’s Shawn Casey with the assist credited to former UAA Seawolf, Eric Lawson.
Each team scored in the second period – Patrick Zmuda for Pizza Man, and Travis Martin for Garcia’s. With the penalty box being visited by a steady stream of players from both teams, the period ended with Pizza Man up 2-1.
It was the third period when things really got heated. Garcia’s Wes Oistad scored unassisted. Pizza Man netted three unanswered goals; the first by Kyler Quinn, followed by Patrick Zmuda and Max Daughtery. With 3:04 remaining, Oistad got his second goal of the night, bringing the score even closer. Zmuda notched a hat trick with a goal at 1:38 left in the game. Garcia’s Kyle Johnson, refusing to give up, scored the final goal at :08. But it wasn’t enough, Pizza Man held on, defeating Garica’s 6-4. Pizza Man is in second place with a record of 5-2-1 and winless Garcia’s is in fourth with a record of 0-7-1.
