At 4:04 PM on Monday, March 6, 2017, a citizen called APD Dispatch regarding their concerns for a neighbor who had not been seen in quite a while.
It was also relayed that the neighbor had health problems. Officers responded to a home on the 21600-block of Oberg Road in Chugiak. It was clear there had been no recent activity as there were no foot prints in the snow. There was no answer when officers knocked on the door. Through the window police could see a lifeless dog as well as a house kept in very poor condition. Concerned that the homeowner may be incapacitated or deceased, officers entered through an unlocked back door. The house was filled with trash and animal feces. A total of two dead dogs were found inside but no people and no living animals. Animal Control responded and took possession of the dogs. Officers were able to locate the homeowner, 59-year-old Kathleen A. Murphy, at her office in Anchorage. It was discovered Murphy had left her home and the dogs behind several days prior and began living at work (she is self-employed). Murphy had a dog living in the office with her who was underweight and had urinated inside. Animal Control responded and picked up the dog which they have been caring for since. Murphy was arrested for Cruelty to Animals – Fail to Care.
APD Case 17-9549.
