Shooters from Chugiak High School defeated their cross-town rivals, the Eagle River Wolves on Fri., Oct. 21 in a 3-4 match on an in-service school day that also saw this season’s first snowfall.
In a previous matchup as practice match on Sept. 23, ERHS won.
The Oct.21 match was close right up until the end with the rifle shooters from CHS narrowly defeating ERHS.
Eagle River’s top shooters senior Haylee Nicholson, a senior, and Ashtin Bennett, a junior, tied with an overall high score of 287. The tie was broken by rifle rules that instruct officials to count the number of bulls shot by each shooter. Nicholson shot more bulls scores thus becoming the champion of the match.
It still wasn’t enough though to defeat CHS, whose various teams scored higher than the ERHS teams.
“Chugiak shot great Friday Night. Even with Haylee and Ashtin shooting 287’s, we just didn’t get in the right groove to match their six shooters over 280,” SamanthaTaylor, ERHS rifle head coach, said. “It was a job well done for Chugiak and more lessons learned for our team.”
The Eagle River A Team shooters were Haylee Nicholson with a 287, Ashtin Bennett with a 287, Madeline Bidinger with a 280 and Daniel Foshee with a 274. Together scoring a 1,128 against Chugiak’s score of 1,137, earning Chugiak two points.
The Eagle River B Team shooters were Haley McGrew with a 274, Ian Soellers with a 267, Brandon Rose with a 267 and Spencer Singleton with a 266. Together scoring a 1,074 against Chugiak’s score of 1,087, earning Chugiak two points.
The Eagle River C Team shooters were Lauren Flanagan with a 260, Grace Rochon with a 255, Colby Fletcher with a 249, and Ava Perkins with a 247. Together scoring a 1,010 against Chugiak’s score of 961, earning Eagle River two points.
ERHS shooters participated in the school’s annual fall carnival after the match. Team members had organized a hunting basket and manned the team’s booth featuring a “Shoot the Great Pumpkin” game. ERHS rifle shooters taught carnival attendees the different shooting positions by using Nerf guns.
