The Mustangs gridiron boys of Chugiak High School clinched a playoff spot with their Sept. 23 victory over the Wasilla Warriors. The final score of 48-12 came under a convincing performance by two juniors who said they wanted the win for the seniors on their team. At 2-1 in Rainbelt Conference and 4-3 overall, the Mustangs rode to the victory with junior Derryk Snell turning in yet another impressive game performance.
Snell, a receiver/running back, made seven runs for 130 yards and caught three passes for 58 yards netting him a total of 188 yards in the Friday night game. He made three touchdowns – two resulting from passes; one on a 26-yard run.
Chugiak’s quarterback, Hunter Harr, completed four of 12 passes for 84 yards. Two of those passes were to Snell. Harr also rushed for 42 yards and two scores.
Ramal Maad, a CHS return specialist, had a 55-yard run after faking a toss to a teammate that fooled enough of the Warriors defenders to give Maad running room up the left side as his blockers paved the way for him to get deep into Wasilla territory.
Maad made a 22-yard run in for a touchdown three plays later.
The Mustangs finish up their regular season Fri., Sept. 30 at Colony High School. Junior varsity plays at 4 p.m.; varsity takes the field at 7 p.m.
